Secondary Windows
Replacing old windows and doors isn't always feasible, especially if the building is heritage listed and needs to maintain its period features. Additionally, body corporate or council permissions might be necessary to ensure that new double glazed windows and double glazed doors match the existing ones. Although such energy efficient windows are rarely rejected, securing the proper approvals can take months and involve significant effort. For those who prefer to avoid this hassle, installing secondary windows can be an excellent alternative.
Many clients are referred to us by energy efficiency consultants and acoustic engineers, as our secondary glazing solutions provide exceptional insulation against heat, cold, wind, water, and noise. Essentially, secondary double glazing mimics the benefits of triple glazing with a wider air gap, creating an ideal environment for luxury and comfort.
Secondary glazing requires a minimum 50mm gap from your existing windows to the wall or a windowsill with at least 50mm of wall space. If unsure, send us photos or arrange a free consultation with our surveyor.
Installation Process: When installing secondary double glazed windows, we retain your existing windows. Our installers do not remove the original windows during this process.
Tools Required:
-
Gloves, Goggles
-
Tape Measure, Spirit Level, Pencil
-
Electric Screwdriver, Hand Drill with 3, 3.5, or 4mm drill bits
-
Screws (various sizes)
-
Saw (to cut an aluminum angle)
-
Expanding Foam
-
Window Packers (1, 3, 7, 12mm)
Fitting Secondary Double Glazed Windows and Doors: This involves a two-stage process: leveling the window horizontally using packers and then securing it with screws. Proper leveling is crucial to prevent the double glazed window from leaning. Screws should be initially tightened lightly and fully secured after all screwing points are attached.
Sealing Secondary Double Glazed Windows and Doors: Sealing requires skill due to limited access caused by the existing window. A corner nozzle for sealant ensures complete weather sealing. Clean the area thoroughly before applying expandable foam and silicon for optimal insulation and a neat finish. Use waterproof silicon outside and, if desired, paintable silicon inside.
Glazing of Secondary Double Glazed Windows and Doors: Glazing involves handling heavy double glazed units, necessitating safety precautions and additional tools like glass suction cups and rubber hammers. Proper positioning and centering of the glass within the frame are essential for a stylish and modern appearance.
Final Step: Fit handles and hinge covers where appropriate, and test the window to ensure smooth operation and airtight sealing. Any gaps or crookedness indicate improper installation, which should be adjusted for user comfort and preference.
