Enhancing Home Security with Double Glazed Windows and Doors

Many burglars attempt to gain entry into a house by forcing open a window or door or by breaking glass. Therefore, window and door security is extremely important but inexpensive to administer. Inspect all double glazed windows and double glazed doors on the ground floor, ensuring that no hinges and locks are loose and that the frame is strong and free from rot or rust. It is also advisable to have locks on skylights or fanlights. Window locks visible from outside can deter a thief since the alternative involves breaking glass, which can be noisy and difficult to pass.

It is surprising that many people still do not take precautionary measures. Of course, just any gadget can’t replace common sense, but our customers can take advantage of the new developments in technology. This gives them comfort and confidence, knowing that the quality and design of the locks and security mechanisms on our energy efficient windows will serve them well.

Many of our clients were used to aluminium windows but found the locking mechanism deficient. The highest level of security offered by the manufacturer on most aluminium windows is a locking handle. While it can meet insurance standards, it’s not particularly secure – it is the handle being locked, not the window. The basic handle may not have good casting and will tend to break under pressure or become loose from the frame. Similarly, with popular wooden casements, casement locks are screwed to the window rather than the frame, a weaker system. Casement windows, by their very design, need to be locked by securing the window to the frame.

All our clients will have multi locks and/or double locking handles and/or hinge side security devices, where appropriate, for extra security. A selection of hardware items is tamper-proof, anti-bump, and even drill-resistant. Our customers have found these measures very effective since they are notoriously difficult to break. For clients particularly concerned about security, our double glazed windows and doors can be equipped with special security systems at an additional cost. Please advise us of your security requirements when you request a quote, describing the requirements and the application.

There are two main types of locking systems:

  • Espagnolette or multi-point locking: These are bolts (normally 3 sets) set into the window and located into locking points in the frame when the handle is turned. The bolts are mushroom-headed, so they engage behind the locking point, enabling the window to resist being forced apart from the frame.

  • Deadlock shoot bolts: These locate into the frame at both opening side corners. There is also a deadlock that secures the opening side of the window at the handle. The window can also be fitted with high-security friction hinges that locate into the frame on the hinge side.

For additional strength, sections of hardened aluminium or galvanised steel reinforcements are fitted within the hollow profiles of the frames so that the locking systems can be secured through the upvc double glazed windows into the reinforcements. Also, all our windows have internal beading to avoid the possibility of the glass being removed from the outside.

Double glazed windows are difficult to break, and when they break, they create a lot of noise. Our window units also come equipped with security systems such as multi-point locks, double-locking handles, and hinge-side security devices. Windows made out of upvc can only be forced open from the outside with a great deal of ingenuity, time, and physical strength. This is because plastic provides a tighter seal around the glass and does not shrink like wooden frames sometimes do.
